Brake Repair & Brake Pad Replacement
Most drivers don't think about their brakes until there's a problem: excessive noise when stopping, taking longer to stop than usual, the sound of metal-on-metal when braking, or pedal pressure is soft or squishy. When you experience any of these symptoms with your car's brakes, it's time to get your brakes serviced.
- Brake Pads 101
- There are three basic types of brake pad materials: Organic, Semi-metallic, and Ceramic.
- Organic pads are made of fibrous composited carbon, fiberglass, & synthetic rubber. They are the least expensive, and have the shortest wear-life.
- Semi-metallic pads are composed of various metals and metal alloys bound together by graphite and lubricants. Semi-metallic pads are the highest performing brake pad material, but also the noisiest.
- Ceramic pads are made from highly dense ceramics and copper fiber to conduct heat away from the rotor. Ceramic pads are more expensive than organic or semi-metallic but are the quietest of the three.
- Disk Brakes
- Disk brakes or caliper brakes, apply brake pad pressure to the rotor to stop the wheel from spinning. Because of their open architecture, they dispel heat rapidly & displace water effectively.
- Drum Brakes
- Drum brakes have been around for many years and are still used for rear wheel braking in many cars today. Their biggest advantage is, unlike disk brakes, they can be "locked" mechanically with a cable, used for a parking brake or emergency brake.
