Diagnosing the Codes
The Check Engine light is a general alarm that can be triggered by something as simple as a $2 leaking air hose or as critical as a misfiring engine. To determine the cause of the annoying glow emanating from your dashboard, you will need to have your vehicle connected to your car's OBD2 port with an OBD2 code reading device to view the error codes.
- Read the Codes
- Recommended fixes for error codes assist mechanics track down problems, but cannot be relied upon without investigation of the problem.
- Real Diagnostics
- The real diagnostics are dependent on the skill & experience of the mechanic. Until the underlying cause of the problem is determined, you could be paying for unnecessary parts replacement.
- Example
- An error code diagnosing a bad EVAP sensor may recommend the sensor be replaced, but the mechanic must make sure that the sensor is receiving power to determine if the sensor is actually faulty. Trouble codes cannot differentiate a severed wire from a failed sensor.
Bill's Auto & Truck Repair would be happy to read the Check Engine light codes for your car, SUV or van, and recommend repair procedure for a flat rate of $75; trucks $150. The CEL code read cost will be put toward your repairs if you choose Bill's to provide repair services.
